Roninflix’s regular and deluxe releases of the 2019 extreme haunted house slasher film deliver a great package for hardcore fans of the cult favorite, as well as a great regular release to match.

I was a big fan of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ Haunt when it came out in 2019, having checked it out at Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood near the old pre-pandemic location of Amoeba Music on the Sunset Strip. It features a really well-executed script by the A QUIET PLACE duo that keeps you guessing throughout and great performances by the cast that escalate from kids looking for cheap thrills to people desperate to save their lives as the danger of what they’re facing dawns on them, with a great throughline by actress Katie Stevens as the film’s ‘final girl’ and being a survivor of abuse and making your way out the other side. The film’s production values are off the chart great with tremendous antagonist designs straight out of vintage Halloween mask catalogs with a modern vibe and it’s really only now in 2020 that Haunt is starting to find its audience as a Halloween favorite. So now that Haunt is being celebrated on Shudder and Joe Bob Briggs’ Last Drive-In, Roninflix is releasing Haunt on a Collector’s Edition 2-Disc collection with tons of great extras, as well as a regular Blu-Ray edition with the same extras that are just as great a release.

Haunt follows Harper (Katie Stevens), a girl who is in an abusive relationship with a guy named Sam (Samuel Hunt). Her friend and roommate Bailey (Lauryn McClain), inspires her to leave the toxic situation and go out and be weird with her on Halloween. They meet with two of their friends Angela (Shazi Raja) and Mallory (Schuyler Helford) at a bar, where they befriend Nathan (Will Brittain) and Evan (Andrew Caldwell). The group decides to find an extreme haunted house to go to since the night is young, even as Harper feels someone is following them. the group encounters a run-down haunted house with a Clown masked host. The group enters the haunted house, but as they begin their journey through it, the cheap gags turn out to be frightfully real before too long and the classic masked characters inside prove themselves to be something much darker than they could have imagined.

Roninflix’s 2-Disc collector’s edition includes some great bonuses for fans. It includes five 16 x 20 posters of the main masked villains in hero shots, plus a map of the haunted house – a great bonus for fans of the film. It also includes the film’s soundtrack by tomandandy, and a set of 6 enamel pins featuring the film’s masked characters, as well as 4 magnet set of the film’s alternate posters. It also has a unique cover design and slipcover case. The regular collector’s edition comes in a clear blu ray case, with a cardboard slipcover featuring a montage poster of the various members of the masked cult. The film is presented with 5.1 DTS-HD audio mix in a 2.35.1 widescreen ratio from a 1080p HD transfer. It has some great extras including a dedicated audio commentary track from the actors behind the Clown, Ghost and Devil masked characters, as well as a great making-of featuring the full cast, the special effects artists behind the great villains, and composer tomanadandy. There is an additional commentary from Beck and Woods, as well as a few featurettes, including a behind the scenes documentary on the film and one on the film’s sound design, which is an important character in the film, as well as a Q and A from the Popcorn Frights Film Festival, as well as one from the Egyptian Theater moderated by Eli Roth, and several deleted scenes, the film’s trailer, an intro by the filmmakers and a related short called The Sleepover, being Beck and Woods’ first short film.

Overall, this is a pretty definitive package for fans of Haunt and Beck and Woods. You get their first feature, loaded with extras, their first short, tons of archival material surrounding the release, as well as a commentary from the film’s primary antagonists and a great making-of smorgasbord in 2 attractive packages. Roninflix has outdone themselves in putting together such a great release and one that should be on the radar of horror fans everywhere as a perennial Halloween slasher classic.
