The Fantasia Film Festival kicks off this week and there are a ton of awesome genre movies debuting at the annual genre film festival based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. We’re going to be covering it here on Cult Following and on the Cult Classics YouTube channel. But Here are 5 films debuting there we’re super jazzed to go see!

1) THE NIGHT HOUSE

Director David Bruckner directs one of our favorite actresses Rebecca Hall in this intriguing supernatural thriller. Hall is a widow whose architect husband secretly built a mirror image of their home which she only learns about after his death. It looks like there might be a doppelganger of herself in the other home and weird things are definitely afoot. I’m excited to see it and if you can attend the festival, this is a must-see

2) ALIEN ON STAGE

Lucy Harvey and Danielle Kummer directed this charming documentary, which was also executive produced by Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg about a group of English bus drivers who stage their own adaptation of the Ridley Scott horror movie Alien as a theatrical play. It has shades of The Office and Parks and Rec, but all the more engrossing because it is 100% real. Well worth checking out. I caught it at SXSW and it was oen of my favorites.

3) AGNES

I’m a sucker for demonic possession films if done well and this was all the hallmarks of a quality horror focusing on a nun targeted in this stylish-looking film.

4) HELLBENDER

A vampire film is usually a great metaphor for a coming of age tale; just look at Let The Right One In. This has all the hallmarks of falling into that company. It’s got a lot of buzz and we’re excited to check it out.

5) PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND

This one debuted at Sundance back in January. While not the masterpiece of Cage acting that Pig is; it’s Nicolas Cage plus Sion Sono is a crazy Japanese visual laden gorefest as a prisoner with a booby-trapped suit sent on a rescue mission with shades of Death Race 2000 by Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome if directed by Jodorowsky. If you haven’t seen it, make a bee-line for it!

HONORABLE MENTION

The live-action adaptation to the popular anime series based on an academy of gambling prodigies makes its North American debut here at Fantasia. Its built a big following due to the series being on Netflix, so this will be a popular premiere.
